Quaker Pass
Updated on 17 March 2021
Painted in 1931, Quaker Pass is by the Utah artist Hilma Mole Payne (1902 – 1965).
Born and bred in Utah, Hilma held her first solo show in 1922, while still an art student at the University. She was one of the early Utah artists who were promoted by Utah’s First Lady of the Arts.
Payne’s style would be considered Impressionist, and her favorite subjects to paint were regional Utah landscapes. She had the rare ability to work in any media with competency including oils, watercolors, pastel, pen and ink and etchings.
