Stop the War Coalition campaigns against military interventions, promoting peaceful solutions and challenging the UK's role in international conflicts since its formation in 2001.

Founding and early purpose

Stop the War Coalition was established in the United Kingdom in 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks. Its founding members included trade unionists, academics, MPs, peace activists, and representatives from civil society groups who were united in their opposition to the looming war in Afghanistan.

The coalition's central aim was to prevent what it saw as unjust and illegal wars, and to provide a platform for peaceful solutions to global conflicts. It gained widespread recognition as a vocal critic of the so-called "War on Terror," especially military actions taken by the US and UK.

The Iraq War and mass mobilisation

Stop the War rose to international prominence during its campaign against the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In February 2003, it co-organised what remains the largest political protest in UK history, when over one million people marched through London to demand the government not join the US-led invasion.

Despite the protest, the war went ahead. However, the mass mobilisation showed the depth of public opposition and set a precedent for future anti-war activism. The coalition continued to hold public meetings, publish materials, and stage demonstrations throughout the war and in its aftermath, focusing on issues like civilian casualties, government accountability, and the erosion of international law.

Ongoing campaigns and causes

Today, Stop the War continues to oppose military interventions around the world. It has spoken out against UK involvement in conflicts in Libya, Syria, and Yemen, and has consistently challenged policies that promote militarism over diplomacy. It also campaigns against the use of drones and the militarisation of foreign policy.

The coalition often responds rapidly to international developments, calling public meetings, issuing statements, and organising protests to maintain pressure on political leaders. It works closely with trade unions, student organisations, and other grassroots groups to build a broad base of support for peace initiatives.

Partnerships and shared goals

Stop the War is known for its collaborations with peace and justice groups such as Campaign Against Arms Trade, CND, and international human rights organisations. These partnerships amplify shared goals, including nuclear disarmament, the protection of civil liberties, and opposition to arms sales to regimes involved in conflict or repression.

Though it has at times faced criticism for its stance on certain geopolitical issues, the coalition remains firmly committed to non-interventionist principles and the belief that long-term peace comes through dialogue, not bombs.

A continued voice for peace

Over two decades since its founding, Stop the War remains one of the most consistent voices advocating for peace and restraint in UK foreign policy. Its work highlights the human cost of war and the need for greater transparency and accountability in government decisions about military action.

Whether through mass marches or quiet vigils, Stop the War Coalition gives a platform to those who believe another world is possible—one built on cooperation, justice, and the peaceful resolution of conflict.
