29. Quaker Cinema Ticket

Issued on 1 November, 1940, this original ticket is from the grand opening of the Quaker Cinema.

1970s facade

The Quaker Cinema is in New Philidelphia, Ohio, and originally had a contemporary Art Deco exterior with a single screen auditorium that could seat over 800 people.

During the 1970s, a white brick facade (which was ugly) was added to avoid costly repairs.

However, during the 1980s the cinema closed but reopened again in the 1990s. In 2014 renovations began to the exterior of the building to restore it to its original splendour.

Now the theatre is back in full neon glory and has upgraded to two screens.

The Quaker Cinema prides itself on being part of the community that offers affordable tickets and screens family friendly films.

Quakers on Screen

The article Moved by the Spirit (opens in a new tab) by Elizabeth Payne explores seven films that have at least one Quaker as a major character. The seven films are:

  • Quaker Oaths (2016)
  • Einstein and Eddington (2008)
  • Iron Jawed Angels (2004)
  • Friendly Persuasion (1956)
  • High Noon (1952)
  • The Angel and the Badman (1947)
  • Beauty’s Worth (1922)

As well as film Quakers, sometimes not named, have invariably appeared in several notable television series over the years. Recent examples include The Devil’s Whore (2009), Peaky Blinders (2013), Outlander (2014), Fleabag (2016) and The Handmaid’s Tale (2017).
